10 At-Home Drills to Help You Improve Your Basketball Skills in Brampton

Are you a Brampton youth basketball player looking to take your game to the next level? Whether you're in 6th grade, 7th grade, or 8th grade, there are plenty of ways you can improve your skills from the comfort of your own home.


If you're looking to join a Brampton basketball league or participate in Brampton house leagues, it's important to make sure you're always working on your game. Here are 10 at-home drills you can do by yourself to get better at basketball:

  1. Ball handling: This is an essential skill for any basketball player. To improve your ball handling, try practicing with a tennis ball or golf ball to increase the difficulty. You can also try dribbling with one hand, then switching to the other hand, or doing crossover dribbles.

  2. Free throws: Free throws are an important part of the game, and they can be practiced anywhere. Set up a hoop in your driveway or backyard, and practice shooting free throws. Try to make a certain number in a row before moving on to the next drill.

  3. Layups: Layups are another essential skill for basketball players. To practice layups at home, set up a hoop and try to make a certain number in a row from each side of the basket. You can also try practicing off-hand layups to improve your overall ball-handling ability.

  4. Dribbling through cones: This drill helps improve your ball-handling speed and agility. Set up cones in a straight line and try to dribble through them as quickly as possible. You can also set up cones in a zig-zag pattern to work on your change-of direction skills.

  5. Jump shots: To practice your jump shot at home, set up a hoop and try to make a certain number of shots from different distances. You can also try shooting off the dribble to simulate game-like situations.

  6. Rebounding: Rebounding is an important skill for any basketball player. To practice rebounding at home, find a wall and try to rebound the ball off it. You can also try practicing your boxing out technique by using a chair or other object to simulate a defender.

  7. Passes: To improve your passing ability, try setting up a few cones or other objects and practice making passes around them. You can also try practicing different types of passes, such as chest passes, bounce passes, and overhead passes.

  8. Footwork: Footwork is an essential part of basketball. To improve your footwork, try practicing lateral shuffles, shuffle cuts, and other footwork drills. You can also try doing plyometric exercises to improve your explosiveness and agility.

  9. Ball fakes: Ball fakes are a great way to create separation from defenders. To practice ball fakes at home, try pretending to pass or shoot and then dribbling past a cone or other object.

  10. Defense: To improve your defense, try practicing your stance and footwork by shuffling laterally and sliding your feet. You can also try practicing your closeouts by running to a cone or other object and getting in a defensive stance.
